Transforming Social Leaders: ‘Social Work to Management’ Programme

Published: 4 March 2025

The Aspiring ‘Social Work to Management’ course, delivered over several months in an engaging face-to-face format, has become a cornerstone for social workers and council employees seeking to transition into leadership roles. Designed to bridge the gap between practitioner and manager, this programme equips participants with essential leadership skills, practical strategies, and the confidence to take their careers to the next level.

From exploring leadership theories to developing personalised communication approaches, the course offers a tailored experience that prepares participants to thrive in their new roles. Below, we hear from two attendees who have successfully navigated this transformative journey.

Building Leadership Confidence: Melanie’s Story

Melanie Waldeck, now a Team Manager at Northumberland Children Services, joined the course to sharpen her leadership abilities and support her career aspirations. Reflecting on her motivations, Melanie shared:

“I decided to take on this course in line with career progression. At the time, I was a Team Manager on Zoom, and I really wanted to gain more leadership skills and understanding to support my journey.”

Melanie appreciated the course’s emphasis on reflection, which allowed her to consider her own leadership style and explore new strategies for managing her team effectively.

“It’s been great to have the time to reflect and look at different leadership models. I’ve gained knowledge about how to tailor my communication to different team members and situations.”

This reflective practice has already made a tangible difference in Melanie’s role.

“The course has supported me to think differently in my position as a Team Manager. I’ve been able to implement some of the skills I’ve learned, and it’s had a positive impact on my team and my own development.”

In addition to its practical applications, Melanie praised the course for its engaging format. With group discussions, interactive activities, and accessible pacing, the programme provided an environment where participants could thrive.

Paving the Way for Career Progression: Michaela’s Perspective

For Michaela Stewart, a Senior Practitioner Social Worker with South Tyneside Council, the programme aligned perfectly with her ambition to become a Practice Manager.

“I have a passion and drive to progress in my Social Work career. Being a Senior Practitioner, I aspire to take the next step to become a Practice Manager, and this course was exactly what I needed to prepare for that transition.”

Michaela found each session rich with insights, providing her with tools and strategies to enhance her leadership skills.

“Every session has been packed with models, tips, and strategies that I can use in my day-to-day practice. One standout moment was learning about different personality styles and how to adapt my leadership to suit individual team members. It’s given me the confidence to better support my team and service users alike.”

The course also proved invaluable for her professional growth outside of her current role.

“I’ve recently participated in interviews for a Practice Manager position. This course gave me the skills to strengthen my interview techniques and made me feel much more prepared for future opportunities.”

Michaela also highlighted the programme’s delivery, describing it as accessible, engaging, and full of real-world relevance.

“The training delivery has been fantastic. It’s clear, easy to follow, and full of practical examples that make it easy to understand. The humour and relatable stories shared by the trainers really helped bring the content to life.”
