Many of us experience situations where self-doubt seems to stop us in our tracks and cause us pain and anxiety. I have learned over time to harness (some) of these feelings of doubt and even to be grateful for them. They can regulate the individual, slow down potentially impetuous decision-making, and enable us to triangulate our decisions and actions.
The contrasting states of mind to self-doubt is hubris, or excessive pride. This can lead to detrimental outcomes such as the creation of a false sense of invincibility, leading individuals to ignore potential risks and challenges that then alienate others by seeming arrogant and unapproachable and making others feel undervalued.
Approaching a situation with some humility brought about by some doubts or simply questioning our abilities can lead to individual growth. The attitude that ‘Every day provides an opportunity to learn’ is fed by healthy doubt and a sense of realism. So self-doubt actually does encourage growth and learning!
This approach to harnessing self-doubt can lead to more thoughtful, collaborative, and considered decision-making. By considering potential pitfalls and seeking advice from others, you can make more informed and balanced choices.
Overcoming self-doubt requires resilience and perseverance. Each time you push through self-doubt and succeed, you build confidence and resilience, which can help you tackle future challenges. While self-doubt and hubris are often seen as negative traits, they can have profound impacts on our lives.
Striking a balance between confidence and humility is not always easy, but it is really worth the effort in trying. Next time you have some self-doubt, try to listen to it and rationalise it. It’s often a safety mechanism that we should use and value so we can reap the benefits of what might otherwise have been considered as a negative.
Embracing self-doubt can lead to growth, humility, and better decision-making, while unchecked hubris can result in isolation, stagnation, and failure. Where do you want to be in this equation?
